A group of seven people accused of being the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network went on trial on this week, facing charges for violent actions against rightwing extremists that earned them the moniker “Hammer Gang”.
Earlier this month, the US government designated the organization as a terrorist organization together with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist groups.
German prosecutors claim the network was behind targeting locations in the country and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose venue was known as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.
Certain individuals are allegedly accused of using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some with serious injuries.
The trial involving seven defendants is expected to run until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G. and Paul M, also face charges for attacks in Budapest during early 2023, around an annual event called the “day of honor” that attracts far-right participants from across Europe.
Separately, another German activist, Maja T, is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for four counts of attempted assault against far-right activists prior to the identical event in 2023.
Eastern Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth groups, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that counter them.
Prosecutors describe Johann G as a high-ranking member within the organization, tasked with planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.
Alongside Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and simulated violent actions. In storage facilities overseen by Paul M, the network allegedly accumulated tools, pepper spray, concealment items and communication devices.
A different activist formerly involved with the organization, Lina E, emerged as a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for targeting presumed far-right targets.
The US designation makes group members barred from entering the US, blocks financial holdings they may have within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.
The German right-wing Alternative for Germany welcomed the American move and urged the German administration to follow suit. In contrast, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.
“The threat posed by the organization has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and particularly violent members have either received convictions or remain detained.”
